Victorian Special Olympics team at Casey Stadium

February 3, 2020

Casey Stadium played host to the Victorian 2020 Special Olympics team, with athletes from across the state descending on the facility on January 22. Led by Head of Delegation Anna Mezger, the day was an opportunity for both athletes and parents to meet and gain an understanding of the Games the team will compete in later this year. The state-of-the-art facilities at Casey Stadium were utilised for athletes to develop their skills and build connections with other team members. Coming together is important for both parents and athletes to ensure everyone is comfortable prior to making the trip to Tasmania later this year.

Similar to the Olympic Games, the Special Olympics Australia Junior National Games are held every four years, with the 2020 games being held in Launceston from 19-21 October. The Games will see athletes with an intellectual disability aged between 8 – 15 years compete in a number of sports. Athletes participate in both individual and team events including athletics, swimming, gymnastics, soccer and basketball.

Participating in the event is a fantastic opportunity, with this being the first time many have been to Tasmania and even on a plane. While the occasion will be full of nerves for some, others are ready to go with one athlete asking in question time if they will be flying first class.

Special Olympics volunteer and organiser, Moira Ryde has been involved for many years and said, “I never get tired of seeing how much the athletes enjoy themselves.” The passion and dedication of volunteers such as Moira ensures games such as this are possible.

Casey Stadium has a strong emphasis being an inclusive facility from both a design perspective as well as the programs and services provided. Centre Manager, Ian Jenkins commented, “it’s great to work with individuals and organisations who are passionate about inclusion." A variety of inclusive programs have been implemented at Casey Stadium over the past 12-18 months, with some exciting announcements coming in the future.
